The “Perfect” Development Environment

January 19, 2016 by Rick Hernandez Leave a Comment

Programming is hard enough! Don’t let tools get in your way.
The information that you learn from this series is not available to the average programmer. By using what you learn you will stand out from the crowd, create the perfect development environment, understand the command line tools, learn to use automation, will the power of cloud computing, and so much more.

It’s difficult at times looking from the outside at a professional programmer programming.

You might find yourself asking…

“How did you jump to the end of the file?”

“Why does your terminal look different than mine?”

“Wait how exactly do you do that in Windows?”

“How did you just commit a change in git from your Text Editor?”

“How did you get that value from the OS?”

The list of questions goes on and on. Don’t let these small details hold you back from getting your work done.

In reality, no one wants to show you how they setup their personal development environment.

Why is Windows so great? What about OSX and Linux? These are all questions that I had at one point. The reason for this is because no one wants to be criticized in the decisions they make.

All of my instructors at my University did not work in an actual professional setting. If you were brave enough to ask for a suggestion in what to use for your development environment you would end up with a generic recommendation such as

“Just use Netbeans, Eclipse or IntelliJ. and let the IDE do the thinking for you.”

Once I entered the actual workforce, I found out that working professionally was nothing like my studies. Everyone had their own workflows, plugins, favorite text editors, macros, etc.

This made my development environment even more confusing, until one of my coworkers a Senior Software Engineer sat me down and explained everything to me step by step. It took weeks to complete this training! He explained to me text editors, IDE’s, bash, profiling, macros, operating systems, virtual machines, cloud environments, local environments, git, aliases, jobs etc. But most importantly I was shown how to be happy with my own work.

The reason why I’m telling you this story is because I want to help you avoid this pain of constantly searching to find the perfect development environment. In this series I show you all the insights that I have gathered throughout my career as a programmer.

This series is a gift from me to you, giving back all of my experience as a programmer. It has taken me years, and countless mentors to be able to provide this for you.
