Talking Tech…One downside about talking about technology is that as a technology professional you tend to get stuck in this phase of learning and learning and searching and searching for the perfect tool for your project.
As a good consultant that I’m writing to you in this words, it all starts with outcomes! -Rick H.
The entire purpose of this portfolio that we are building is one and only one outcome, which is getting new clients. If you would have had this exact same problem in 1999 or in the current year you would end up solving it with just about the same solution.
If we have this in mind we can start looking at all the technology options that are available for you to create your portfolio. Your instincts might be telling you to roll your own solution and have some custom scripts that would create an ideal portfolio for you but you are WRONG! You do NOT want to reinvent the wheel. You are a highly trained professional and you don’t want to put those skills that you have to waste by maintaining a ruby project that you started just because you felt like writing ruby on that day.
Even if you have skills to create one of the world’s best portfolio platforms, you do not want to waste your time focusing on tasks that are not getting you closer to the goal of getting new clients.
Having endless options can cause more confusion rather than a resolution, this is why we are going to keep it simple and use WordPress.
Why WordPress? Once your portfolio gets published it’s going to remain static. You might go in there a couple times per year and add some changes such as a new phone number or a new address but for the most part, it’s not going to be changing. You also get the benefit of having a platform that is maintainable, self-contained, you get a wide range of community plugins but most importantly a platform that you own.
You now know what the BEST option in technology to build your portfolio on.
Talk to you next time,
Rick H.
