One of the best features that syslogd can provide for system administrators, is the ability to receive messages whenever something interesting is happening in the network. But like with any good thing certain limits have to be applied. The wonderful part about this is that syslogd can be scripted to send your different types of results either via Email, Text or message to pagers. Now back to the balance issue getting the right information to you in the best time possible might be one of the challenges that has to be overcome using syslogd. So when setting up the system messages, don’t just be brutal and turn all of them ON just because you might be paranoid of your network, sit down and think critically about the most important information that is relevant to your situation. Rule of thumb here is to set events in priority, so you would have high, medium, and low. And you would set them accordingly.
